PTFE Rod Seals

Low-Friction Sealing for Demanding Reciprocating Systems

PTFE rod seals provide reliable fluid control, low breakaway force and stable performance in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders. A precision-machined PTFE sealing ring and compatible elastomer energizer work together to reduce friction, stick-slip and wear.

*Maximum values apply only to selected profiles and materials and are not necessarily achievable at the same time. Final limits depend on seal geometry, energizer, media, hardware, extrusion gap and duty cycle.

01 Overview

A PTFE rod seal is installed in the cylinder head or gland to seal dynamically against a reciprocating rod. Its primary
function is to retain the pressurized medium inside the cylinder while controlling the thin lubricant film carried by the rod
during extension and retraction.
Most PTFE rod seals use a two-piece construction:
A PTFE sealing ring provides the dynamic sealing surface, low friction, wear resistance and broad media compatibility.
●  An elastomer O-ring or shaped energizer supplies initial radial force and compensates for pressure, temperature change and normal wear.
The seal can be used alone in light- to medium-duty equipment or as part of a complete rod sealing system with a buffer seal, secondary rod seal, wear ring and wiper. In tandem arrangements, the primary seal meters the oil film while the secondary seal provides additional leakage control.

Engineering note: A reliable rod sealing system depends on more than the seal itself. Rod finish, alignment, extrusion gap, groove geometry, pressure peaks, contamination control and the wiper design all influence service life.
