Why PTFE wiper seals? Conventional polyurethane wipers are limited by material friction and temperature: typical PU grades are rated to only 5 m/s (2 m/s for some compounds) and +80 °C to +110 °C, and elastomer lips can vulcanise — bond — to the rod surface over time. Lycotek PTFE wiper seals pair a low-friction PTFE scraper ring with an elastomer O-ring energizer that maintains tight lip contact, combining smooth, stick-slip-free operation with dependable scraping in rough, hot or cold environments.
The PTFE scraper ring offers outstanding sliding properties with no stick-slip and no sticking, and it does not vulcanise to the counter-surface of the piston rod. This keeps the wiper responsive at high rod speeds — linear speeds of up to 15 m/s with PTFE materials — and helps avoid the jerky rod motion that accelerates wear of the entire rod sealing system.
A robust scraper profile achieves a very good scraping effect even against firmly adhered dirt, dust, solid particles and ice, and offers excellent wear resistance. The design also compensates for deflection of the piston rod or plunger, keeping the lip in reliable contact under mechanical stress — ideal for earthmoving machinery, presses and other heavily contaminated heavy-duty applications.
Double-acting wipers scrape contamination from the outside while providing a very good sealing effect from the inside against the residual oil film adhering to the rod surface. The AEG series takes this further with two geometrically different scraper lips positioned back-to-back, each energized by its own O-ring, for medium to heavy-duty applications where a gap between the rod and the gland in front of the wiper is not wanted.
High and low temperature capability from -45 °C to +200 °C with PTFE materials (depending on O-ring material) covers sub-zero outdoor service as well as hot-running equipment. The scraper materials offer very high resistance to hydraulic media — mineral oil-based hydraulic fluids, flame-retardant fluids, bio-oils, phosphate ester, water and air — depending on scraper ring and O-ring material compatibility.
The Lycotek PTFE wiper seals range combines PTFE scraper rings with elastomer O-ring energizers to cover both single-acting and double-acting rod scraping requirements.
